The latest year I have been reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. What is different, is the fact that I read it in english and this makes the whole experience a little bit more difficult. When I find a new word ( a word which I don’t know ) I either underline it and then look it up in a dictionary or try to work it out. But, most of the time, I cannot manage to find exactly its meaning, so I get a bit frustrated and bored but others, I find it really interesting and challenging. Another way of finding the new words is surfing the Internet. There are some special websites for this particular aim, such as the Dictionary.com, or you can visit gogle, click on translation and press any word. The meaning is shown as well as the meaning of this word as an adjective, verb, noun, etc. In fact, this ‘hobby’ is a motivation for practicing your English and getting better at the reading part of the exams!

I had the same problem with the book I was reading but at the end I decided to use the Internet instead of a dictionary to find the definitions of the unknown words!! Try it and let me know!!!!

Of course, I don’t look for all the words because if I did so ,I would have read only 5 pages!

Hi there!
I remember when I read a book in English for the first time, it was Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban. I went through pretty much the same thing you’re going through. It was hard and frustrating at first but it was also great learning! I became a fan of Harry Potter and I’ve read all the books at least twice, in English and in my first language, Portuguese. I know this might sound extremely geeky of me, but what can I do?
Nowadays, I think I enjoy reading in English more than in Portuguese because of the challenge it presents.
I hope you enjoy the book ( Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is one of my favorites)!

Hi lara!
To begin with, I would like to thank you and Shimabuko for writing to our blog and I hope you enjoyed it. Lara, now I read this book without searching every single word I don’t now, so I don’t find it so hard. I have also this book in greek, too, so if sometimes I cannot understand a whole paragraph or a page, I open the greek version and read it. Fortunately, the translation is almost the same. I am a Harry Potter fan, too, but with what you wrote me, it seems that you like it more! In fact, J.K.Rowling writes in a very discriptive way, so in my opinion Harry Potter books are the best option in order to learn new vocubulary like discriptive adjectives.Lara, could you please tell me which book you are reading now?

Well, maybe your teacher have already talked about this to you, so let me introduce myself. I’m a brazilian student who is studying for the CAE exam, and I blogging to improve my english as well…
Well, I just love this book you’re reading. For me it’s one of the best one of the best books of the serie despite the fact that its end still bothers me…
I tryed to read I few books in english just as you are doing, and I had the same impressions, sometimes it’s frustrating, but most part of the time the sensation of chalenging is motivating. If you wanna improve your vocabulary, I would suggest you to read the “Series of unfortunate events” from Lemony Snicket. It is really nice and it brings a very good vocab, although the story is a little childish. I never finished reading it because there are 13 books and I have other things to study, but I enjoyed all the books I read.
Good luck with your studies and your blog! See ya
Shimabuko

^^^welcome both Iara and Shimabuko and thanx for checking out our blog. I honestly hope you enjoy the time you spend here. Shimabuko I have also tried to read Lemony Snicket’s books but every little word in there seems so pessimistic to me that I quit “/ anyway ,I also consider the fifth book of Harry Potter series, which Alina’s reading, my favourite by J.K. Rowling. I have also read each Harry Potter’s book twice in both Greek and English so don’t worry Iara about being the only one.
bb for now..
